This news is from my hometown Ningbo, China.
Some weeks ago, there happened a terrible conflict.
I LOVE NINGBO, I LOVE MY HOMETOWN!

Following a massive week-long protest by residents, a controversial petrochemical project in the eastern city of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, was suspended Sunday. The protest only ended yesterday evening after clashes broke out between crowds and police in front of the local government compound.

Plans for a multibillion-yuan expansion of an oil refinery and chemical plant, located in Ningbo's Zhenhai district, were temporarily halted pending further "scientific assessments," Ningbo officials announced yesterday evening, vowing that that no "paraxylene (PX) project would be allowed in this city."

Angry residents believe the plant, 15.5 kilometers from the city center, would in fact be producing PX, a chemical used to make plastic bottles and polyester and believed by many to be harmful to humans.

Residents protested outside the Ningbo city government building Sunday, shouting slogans, singing the national anthem and holding banners saying "Protect Ningbo."

The government's announcement  later that evening to suspend the project did not entirely quell the crowds.

Although the daytime protest, staYang claimed the water pollution by chemical plants will leave a serious effect on Ningbo's aquatic products.

Clashes originally broke out on Friday between protesters and the police. The Zhenhai police Saturday denied online rumors that said they had beaten a college student to death.

Ningbo's top officials met with resident representatives on Saturday. The government announced it was willing to listen to public appeals, and that the Zhenhai project would undergo more environmental impact assessments.

Hu Wenfei, a press officer for the Ningbo city government, told the Global Times the government had made the decision to suspend the project on Sunday "out of respect for public opinions."

PX projects have been controversial nationwide in the past, including sparking protests last year on one occasion in Dalian, Liaoning Province, which again forced the local government to back down and move the project elsewhere.

Ma Jun, director with the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs, said the protests reflected a rising public environmental awareness.

Ma admitted that some residents might not be fully educated about specific health hazards before rushing to reject any chemical industry.

"Zhenhai is filled with lots of chemical plants already and the possible pollution of this proposed factory makes residents more worried," Ma said.

He suggested the government show more transparency in its work and communicate with residents about possible health impacts earlier. "We need more rational public participation in this process, since it can't be realized by street politics.rting from 9 am, proceeded peacefully, conflicts broke out at around 8:30 pm, as armed police arrested dozens of protesters while trying to disperse thousands more demonstrators.

The petrochemical plant expansion was planned as part of the Ningbo Petrochemical Economic and Technical Development Zone in Zhenhai, with an investment of some 55.8 billion yuan ($8.8 billion). The plant would have then had the capacity to refine 15 million tons of crude oil a year.
One resident, Yang, who joined in the Sunday protest, told the Global Times, "The city doesn't need such a notorious project despite a big investment."
Yang claimed the water pollution by chemical plants will leave a serious effect on Ningbo's aquatic products.

Art Through Time: A Global View

The human impulse to create art is universal. Art has been has been a way to communicate beliefs and express ideas about the human experience throughout all stages of civilization and in every region of the world. As cultural documents, works of art provide important insights into past and existing cultures, helping us to understand how others have lived and what they valued.

Art Through Time: A Global View, featuring thirteen half-hour programs, a guide, text, and other Web resources, takes a thematic approach to art history and appreciation. Rather than a linear chronology, the materials explore connections in Western and non-Western art, illuminating the breadth, complexity, and beauty of works produced around the world and at different periods of time.
In each program focusing on a particular theme, a diverse group of leading experts, together with a living artist, contextualize and connect featured works from different cultures and eras. The Web site, guide, and text provide a variety of opportunities to learn more.

The Meaning of Art

What do you think the meaning of "Art"?
Is it a Nature Power?
Is it a Mind's Idea?
Or it is a Life...................

People use the melting aluminum into ants' hole, then surprised the creation of ants' building. They put this "Art Work" into the museum, but whatever the work how wonderful, they also kill many lifes here.

Sometimes creation need to "Try", after "Try" we will find some great art work from Nature Power. But how do we define the relationship between "Life" and "Art"? How do we as an art teacher to explain this "Art" in front of our students?

Using Technology in Good Way

The news is from my homtown Ningbo. Some high schools(includ my school) are using iPad in education.

There is no book, no keybord on the desk, students can do some physical or chemistry experiments in ipad. This program in education in China still a test, but it is really cool in some complex classes. It let my think about Salman Khan , he create videoes in teaching for students, and create his own non-profit educational organization. So, combine technology with education is really can improve quality of teaching.

Love Package

Some days ago, I received some postcards from Chenguan Town School in Xining Qinghai China. The postcards are from the students in this school.

This is an activity from China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, called "Little Bag, Big Love". And the activity is to poor ares primary school students. There are three programs people can choose :

Donated 100 yuan(RMB), people can send a student an "Art Bag", to help one child come true his/her "Art Dream";     Donated 1000 yuan(RMB), can send a school  a "Sports Bag" or a "Music Bag", round a poor area elementary school teachers' and students' "Sports/Music Dream";                                              and here also has Designated Donated.
Here is a link from this activy web, but I can't find

So, I heard this activity from my friend. When I graduated, I donated a part of my scholarship in China Post, used 2000 yuan(RMB) to 20 children, to round 20 "Art Dreams".                                                                                   "Little Bag, Big Love" is a great program, it has a real meaning to help people what they need. I want to contact with "my children", I have a plan to go to there and try my best to help them to come ture their more "Dreams".
